Seethawaka Botanical Garden

December 12, 2019

Travelling along the Puwakpitiya – Thummodara road in Avissawella brings you to the beautiful and calm Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanical Garden. Easily reached from Colombo, Seethawaka gardens are the latest addition to the five botanical gardens in Sri Lanka and was first opened to the public in late 2014. Covering over an area of 79acres, this wet zone botanical garden mainly serves as a research and conservation ground for highly threatened endemic plants in the Sinharaja Rain Forest region. And while working for the improvement of export floriculture, Seethawaka also actively promotes bamboo cultivation in Sri Lanka.

What sets the Seethawaka Garden apart from all the other botanical gardens in the island is that it mostly consists of plants rather than flowers. The garden, still growing, also exudes a subtle charm that attracts not only the plant enthusiasts but friends, families and lovers. With a beautiful stream flowing through the gardens, Seethawaka offers its visitors with lovely swan-boat rides that further adds to its appeal. Having a cool climate, pleasant temperature and stone paved paths to comfortably walk around and enjoy the scenery; Seethawaka Botanical Garden is open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and is the perfect place for a day out away from the bustle of the city.
