Lovers Leap Waterfall

March 01, 2019

As one of the many impressive waterfalls found in Nuwara Eliya, the 30m high cascading waters of the Lovers Leap falls has become a popular tour destination, due to the beauty and romantic folklore surrounding it. The mystic fall tells the story of a prince who, while hunting, gets lost in the woods. Even though history doesn’t record their names, it is said that he was rescued by a beautiful maiden and they later fall in love. As the tragic tale goes, because of the opposition from the King and his subjects, the prince and his damsel decides to leap off the waterfall with the hopes of making their love eternal. It is common knowledge that even to date superstitious villagers tend to avoid the waterfall at night.

Located 3km away from the Nuwara Eliya town, the waterfall can be reached after a pleasurable walk through the Pedro Tea Estate. Following the road signs, visitors will eventually come across the rock face and the small Shiva shrine. The grand waters of the lovers leap can be seen just beyond this shrine.

Tourists are recommended to take a guide with them, as there can be leeches and the path leading towards the waterfall is laid with slippery rocks and can be a bit hard to climb.
